Nelson Oyen Torvik P.L.L.P. was founded in 1941 by John P. Nelson and Sigvald B. Oyen. Both Nelson and Oyen were graduates of the University of Minnesota Law School, and both became widely respected for their honest and thorough representation of clients. The firm quickly established itself as one of the most respected firms in West Central Minnesota.
Currently the partners of the firm include Janice Nelson who joined in 1982, Matthew Haugen who joined the firm in 2012, Christopher Reisdorfer who joined the firm in 2017, and associate attorney Elizabeth Bloom who joined in 2021. Past partners include the Honorable David Minge, former United States Congressman and Minnesota Court of Appeals Judge, the Honorable Bruce W. Christopherson, former District Court Judge, Stephen Torvik and former Chippewa County Attorney David Gilbertson.
Nelson Oyen Torvik has satellite offices in Clarkfield and Appleton, Minnesota, in addition to its main office in Montevideo.
The practice areas of the firm are diversified and varied. Particular strengths include real estate, estate planning, family law, elder and probate law, corporate and transactional work. In addition, Matthew Haugen serves as the Chippewa County Attorney, and Janice Nelson as the Montevideo, Clarkfield and Milan City Attorney.
